Starting a photography business…?

What is an easy, fast, cheap (preferably free) way to get my photography business moving? Really, all I’m looking to do right now is get noticed, get a few jobs, and build my client base.. oh, and build my portfolio (an ongoing expedition).

Here’s some more info on the type of photography I do if anyone has any specific ideas for how to get started and be successful:
I’m actually still in college (Marketing and Management major).. I’m open to suggestions on taking photography classes. Online, also, even though I’m still a little iffy about that.

I do concert photography, landscape, and possibly some wedding portraits (I have a friend that wants me to photograph her wedding, so we’ll see how that works out)

My sister does portraits (helping models develop their portfolios)

So yes, I need lots and lots of advice on this because I’m going crazy!

write a marketing plan, write a business plan – implement them

hows your photography? start studying, do night classes or day classes do all that you can, if you start doing jobs and your work is below par you wont last long in the bizzo

What is the absolute earliest age I could get in as a wedding photographer?

I’m 15 right now, and obviously that’s a bit too young to start shooting weddings.

I already have a digital SLR camera and two lens, so equipment is not a big issue. I also take pretty good pictures, and will only get better since I am taking photography classes.

So, when is the earliest I could get into shooting weddings, even just as an assistant? I know there is no set age, but a reasonable age? And then, how should I start off? Online ads, as well as in the papers? And I have no experience shooting weddings (my relatives are foreign and almost all of them live internationally, so I can’t shoot their weddings as experience) but I have shot other events (like parades and fairs). Will that count as ‘sample’ photos?

Thanks! Just thought I could get some info. ;)

In my opinion, age is entirely irrelevant.

To get started, try to put together a portfolio of your best work. Contact every wedding photographer you can find in your area and volunteer to assist. To start with, this might just be handing the appropriate equipment to the photographer at the right time. This will allow you to observe and get a feel for the order of events. Usually, if you are good at assisting, you can eventually move up to being a second shooter, and building your portfolio.

While high end, well established photographers might balk at your age, there are bound to be some less established photographers who could use some help but can’t really afford an assistant. This would likely start out as something that you would be doing just for the experience, not for pay, but you can renegotiate that as your experience and skill increases.

Good luck!

License for videography business?

I want to start a wedding videography/photography business. Where should i go to get a license to start a small business? Do i have to have some sort of degree to have a business or some classes? Are they free? Can i do it online? Do i have to get certified as a videographer/photographer to have this sort of business? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I dont know if specifically Videographers need a license. For a Small Business License , get it from the State , duh. You dont need a degree , you just need to show some credit , and be over 18.
