any suggestions as to careers to pursue in photography?

I am majoring in photography and i would like to know some careers in the photography field i can go after. I would be open to most jobs, maybe something that has room for a promotion, or just rising the latter.

I’ve gone into college in search of finding more opportunities, but i’ve stuck with photography, i know the obvious jobs like wedding photographer, or pet photographer or just a portrait photographer.

i don’t mind much about the money i just want a career to look forward to, that i can help support a family with.

I’m no expert but you can do stuff like: just sell your photos, Sports photographer (if you’re good, that’s where the money’s at), Teaching photography, underwater photographer, paparazzi, commercial photography, fashion, nature/environmental, forensic =D, photojournalism,
travel photography sounds fun :D .

Just a few to think about, hope I helped!

Do I definitely need a journalism background to work for a newspaper as a photojournalist?

I graduated a year ago with a degree in literature and minored in photography. I’m now a photojournalistic wedding photographer, but I have been thinking of pursuing a career in photojournalism. Is it essential to have a journalistic background/degree or do I have the basic skills to apply for places like Globe and Mail and CBC?

The Globe and Mail and the CBC aren’t going to hire someone who hasn’t already worked at smaller newspapers, and likely at very large newspapers. That being said, you don’t need a journalism background, but it helps.

Your best bet on breaking into the industry is to add some news or feature photography to your portfolio. Contact the photo editor at your local paper and ask about freelancing. Don’t ever turn an assignment down, and make the best out of what you’re probably going to think are some pretty lame events (parades, graduations, high school sporting events). Just keep building up that portfolio, pay your dues and, if you’re good, you’ll find a way into the industry.

Keep getting better and, in about 10 years, start applying for those gigs at the Globe and Mail and CBC.
