Digital Photography for Beginners – Understanding File Formats – JPEG, TIFF or RAW!

In this digital photography for beginners We see the article for file formats. In the past, the photographs were captured in a plate sensitive to light. Then, after developed in the darkroom, a negative result. With digital photography, images are stored on a digital file. To view the file is decrypted – and there are three main types of file used – JPEG, TIFF and RAW.

Before viewing these files, it is relevant to explain the difference between the "lost" files and "lossless". When you take a picture, the camera records the data in the memory card into a file. If all data is stored is called a lossless file. These files are large. Lossless RAW files. To reduce the file size, the camera may exclude some data are not readily discernible to the human eye. JPEG is a lossy file. A TIFF file is, in principle, a format flexible and can be with or without loss.

JPEG – Is the file format used by amateur photographers, mainly because many photos can be recorded on a card. Although the actual number may vary depending on the device used, it is easily possible to take over 1500 images with A Memory Card 2 GB

As it is a lossy file, images are compressed resulting in a greater number of images possible relative to lossless files (TIFF or RAW). The camera lets you adjust the compression level, more or less, the pictures can be taken. Just keep in mind that the overall quality will be affected more than compress the file. Therefore, if you're looking to print images above standard sizes, you should choose a lower compression.

RAW – These are data files directly from the sensor the camera. This means they are not processed by the camera at all and represent the purest image as taken. They are sometimes called an appliance Digital "negative". Using the optimal (ie, at least) the level of compression, you can expect to store 100 images or less, in a 2 GB with 15megapixel camera. The most important thing is that you'll be able to produce high quality prints to A3 and again. Professional and amateur serious use of RAW files.

Unlike JPEG, RAW files are not universal for all manufacturers. For example, Canon uses the term RAW, equivalent time are called NEF files from Nikon. They are not compatible. However, each manufacturer provides the software with the camera in order to process printed images. RAW files are great for handling post-production services, as all the original data remains intact, and therefore can work with.

TIFF – In practice, TIFF is generally used as a file format that does not use lossless compression. Therefore, size can be Stock great, but keep their data and the subsequent quality. However, the file size is huge compared with the same file JPEG. A common use the TIFF format is working for editing and manipulating digital images in Photoshop, or equivalent. With JPEG edition, slight degradation occurs with each new save file. TIFF is lossless, if the compression is not enabled, so no loss of quality every time a file is edited and saved.

Uncompressed TIFF be used to display images on the web, due to file size. The Most web browsers do not display a TIFF image.

I hope this article for beginners digital photography has helped to clarify the difference between file formats. In short, if the final quality and the overall impression is not necessary, JPEG files more than sufficient, and can also be used on the Internet. RAW files are perfect for photographers who want the best quality, and ability to make detailed changes in post-production. These files can be edited in either TIFF or JPEG when you're ready. TIFF files do not lose quality (If it is uncompressed) so good to work in post-production before the final recording in a JPEG file.
