How does a newcomer get their photography into a gallery?

I have been an amateur photographer for years and I want to begin getting serious. I want to focus on fine art. For starters, I live in a small suburb of Detroit,MI. and we have a local art gallery which invites new artists to exhibit. That’s great and I’m putting work together now.
My question is, how do people get their work into larger or more prestigious galleries in big cities, like LA or NY? How does one go from unknown to being known?
Thanks for your help.

It is kind of like learning to walk. You have to crawl first. You are making the perfect first step by displaying in your local gallery. It is actually quite easy to SUBMIT to galleries all over the world. Google “call for entries” and you can begin getting in the clique. It is really like anything else, the more you get into it, the more will come to you. I have submitted to galleries in many, many places. That gets you into a loop that will lead to contacts with other galleries, and on and on.

Getting your work SELECTED to be in a gallery is an entirely different matter. When you begin submitting to galleries, you will soon see the types of photos that are selected. Even in your local gallery, pay attention to and learn from others. That does not mean to copy other’s work, always do your own and follow your own muse, but looking at other’s work always gives me fresh energy and ideas.

My goal is to also get some work in a New York gallery. I have eight photos submitted to an upcoming showing in SoHo Gallery there now, hopefully this time will be the charm and I will be selected. But if not, I will just keep trying. That is really all you can do. Continue to improve your art and keep submitting to call for entries. I have at least 2 emails in my box everyday from galleries wanting submissions. Just start slow and it will build for you.

There are also portfolio reviews in Houston and Seattle, but these require some serious portfolio work on your part, something you will likely need a few years to create. There are representatives from galleries all over the country at these reviews. They are usually held once every two years. Email me if you want more info as I will have to look up the specifics for you.

Nature Photography: Art or Technology?

Nature photography as an art form has been around for a long time, but recently it has found respect on the walls of up-market galleries. This is a big change from 20 years ago, when nature photography was only considered worthy of second-rate postcards and calendars.

Over the years, postcards and calendars began to improve in quality as nature photographers with real talent entered the industry. High quality posters of whales, wolves, elephants and spectacular landscapes from around the world were suddenly worthy of framing. Finally nature photography galleries began to appear and, more importantly, turn a profit.

When I opened my gallery in 1993, many people still felt that you could not make a living selling photography; that people would only buy paintings to hang on their walls. These days, new galleries are opening everywhere; some good, some not so good, and a few that have really hit the big time.

All this activity in the world of nature photography has inspired new generations of photographers to look at nature photography as a hobby or possible profession. These new nature photographers grew up in a very different world than the one I come from. Technology that was unimagined back then is now commonplace, and new photographers have more power in their hands than ever before. But what implications does all this technology have for nature photography?

Nature photographers must now decide how much they will allow their photography to be influenced by technology. In earlier days, good nature photography required a very simple approach; find a great subject, in the best possible light, and use your skill with a camera to capture what you saw. Today it is quite a different story. A nature photographer can (if they choose) find a decent subject, photograph it in whatever lighting conditions they happen to find, then go home and completely alter the colours, the contrast, and even the detail of the picture. The result can be an image that owes more to the marvels of technology than to the wonders of nature.

Each to his own. It is not for me to judge the creative decisions of another photographer. But the question that is in the back of your mind right now deserves to be asked; is this nature photography?

Every photographer is entitled to pursue their craft any way they choose. Of course skills with computer software are just as creative as traditional nature photography skills. However, the person who views a photograph deserves to know what they are looking at, especially if that person is a customer prepared to part with their hard-earned money.

I know many photographers get quite defensive on this subject. Camera clubs around the world continue to wrestle with the issue of judging natural photos alongside manipulated photos. Some clubs have tried to divide competition into separate categories, only to find people sneaking their digitally altered photos into the unaltered category for equal recognition. Understandably, ‘software photographers’ want their talents to be recognised on the same level as the ‘in-camera photographers’. And so they should, but not in a way that ignores the difference between the two disciplines.

This is not an attempt to denigrate the skills of the software photographers. It just seems to me that the viewer, and in particular the paying customer, deserves to know.

Increasingly the public is becoming suspicious of good photography. Anything that is outstanding or unusual is now assumed to have been altered or manipulated using computer software. In many cases, it probably has. Unfortunately, this suspicion gives little credit to the traditional photographer (and there are still plenty of us out there) who prefer to do the creative work in the field, before they press the shutter, and reproduce what was captured on the day.

You can’t imagine, unless it has happened to you, how frustrating it is to proudly display your best nature photography, only to hear people say ‘These days it’s all done with computers.’

For the record, my photography is as traditional as it can be in the digital age. Software is becoming essential to my work, as I go throught the process of scanning thousands of slides from my years of travel. Not to alter a photo, but to balance the colour and contrast to make sure the printed photograph matches the original slide. It is also an enormous benefit to finally be able to restore images that have been scratched or otherwise damaged by age.

I recognise that the trend towards using software to enhance and alter photos is not only inevitable, but just as legitimate as old fashioned nature photography. However, I continue to encourage people to learn true camera skills as well, so that the use of software to manipulate images is a creative choice, not a remedy for lack of ability. Thankfully, the demand for my ebooks suggests that there are plenty of people out there who feel the same way.

Understanding Several Photography Techniques

In order to improve the photographs you have been taking, you will to learn need some good photography techniques. A good photography technique will help the amateur photographers find the best ways to enhance the images in their photographs and select subjects that would be attractive to photograph. There are many different types of photography techniques for a person to choose from and choosing the right one for the right situation can be a difficult task until you learn each of the different techniques.

The first step in choosing the right photography technique for your needs is determining what you would like the photograph to look like. Many beginners are happy with taking basic images so that they can practice their placement and their lighting until till they are happy with the results.

There is some photography techniques that only focus on the creative aspects of photography and assume that the person already knows the photography basics. More sophisticated techniques are generally useless the photographer is interested in adding their work to a photography gallery, but the basic techniques are great for people that would like to take artistic photographs or are interested in scrap booking.

Basic Photography Techniques

The most common types of photography technique used today are intended to enhance the images that are obtained by the camera. This includes many basic activities that are commonly used by amateur photographers, such as positioning the camera for the best angle and the best lighting and choosing the subject of the photograph carefully to obtain the best image. Basic editing techniques include resizing, cropping, red-eye removal, and some printing options for the people that are using digital cameras.

In some cases, the basic photography techniques learned will also include how to use various filters and how to change the photographs from color to black and white. Many of these techniques require little time to learn and will be retained by the photographer for as long as they are taking photographs.

Advanced Photography techniques

More advanced photography techniques include more difficult applications that require adjustment by the photographer to achieve the best effects. Some of these techniques include using artificial lighting to lighten or darken portions of the images in the photograph, creating off center focal points, and adjusting the horizon in the photograph to better suit the image.

These techniques will increase your photography skills substantially but much practice will be required to create great photographs. While many of the basic photography techniques can be found on the internet for free, learning the more advanced techniques may require a small investment on the part of the photographer.
