Photography Books For Beginners
recommend a good beginner’s photography book?

I have always loved taking pictures and am pretty good at it (being that I dont really know anything about actual photography) Learning how to actually do things properly is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time though.

I have a camera I love. Not just point and shoot but not too complicated either. It’s the Canon S5IS. I have been playing aroudn with the settings and options but really want to know what they are for and how to use them (and not just like a manual on how to use my camera but actually like a “how-to” for eveeything invovled. using shutter speeds, saturation, etc)

Can anyone recommend a good (and easy to udnerstand!) book about beginner’s photography/camera?

I highly recommend any book by Michael Langford (agree with guy above! A thumb up to you!) – the guy is very well versed in technique and explains things very clearly. I’ve not read the Peterson book.

I found the best book I ever used was the humble “Kodak’s Pocket Guide to 35mm Photography.” It fits in your bag and you can grab it and review quickly the techniques you have studied in the Langford book. It covers everything. I am recommending a film based book because this is all transferable to digital, and you’ll have the info you need if you decide to shoot film. If you prefer, Kodak does make a guide to digital photo, but I don’t think it fits in the bag.

What are some really good digital photography for beginners books?

I’m looking for a book with very great breakdown and step by step tips on how to use an SLR. It’s for my roommate and she just bought a Nikon SLR recently, but does not know how to use it, except to point and shoot.
