POLL: Are you fed up with advertisements everywhere?

Hi.

It never used to bother me that i’d see an ad in most places i go, but today it did.

I was in the “ladies room” at work, with my hands under the drier and there it was. A frikking ad right in front me. Trying to convince me to shop at Jenny’s Photography (or something like that) for “high quality family photos at a low low price”.

And i thought “For f*ck sakes! Can’t have a i have bit of peace even in the toilet?”

It’s just ads everywhere..popping up on my phone,my computer, tv,radio, newspaper….and the more technology advances, the more ads were going to get, everywhere, trying to make us part with our money.

Anyways, are you as fed up as i am?

Thanks

xx Sarah

yep i even saw ads at the doctors office. pretty soon people will be wearing clothes like race car drivers with ads all over them

How long do I have to keep the negatives of past clients?

I retired several years ago from wedding and portrait photography. I have tried to reach some of my clients but it is very time consuming. I am willing to send them what I have on file, but most people have moved or are divorced. I was told by another photographer that if I post and ad in the local newspaper announcing my retirement and telling people that they can have their negatives for free if they contact me is all I have to do. After the set time alloted I can then destroy the negatives. That sounds a little harsh to me but I need to clear out the files in storage. Any suggestions?

If you own the negatives (as you almost certainly do unless you surrendered the rights to the clients) then there is no obligation on you to keep them at all. Unless of course you had a contract or a clause in your agreement with them to do so.

If you can’t bring yourself to destroy them, then perhaps a local historical group or similar body might be interested in acquiring them.

How do you start your own photography business?

…Say you come up with the name ‘Williams Photography’, do you have to copyright it (the name) ? I’m sure you have to get a business license right? What if you just use newspaper ads or whatever? Can you have a small photo business without legal involvement? An at-home sort of side hobby…. JW hope to hear some info =)

You can have a photography business without legal involvement, but then you’re limited to not making very much money at it. For a hobby, I suppose that would be fine.

Business names are trademarked, not copyrighted. You have to demonstrate that there is no else in your same trade in your area with the same name. If there is a pet grooming service called “Williams” in your town, you can use that name for your photography service. But if there’s already a photography service called “Williams,” then you can’t. Consult a trademark lawyer for all the nitty-gritty.

I don’t think you need a business license to be a photographer, but this could vary by state or province. If you plan to photograph children, you might need to convince parents that you can be trusted with them.
