Looking for some direction……?
Hi, I am a photographer. I have my BS in photography and two years working experience in New York City. I graduated with honors and a 3.8. I feel confident in my skills ( photographing, post production ( photoshop, etc)), etc. A month ago I was laid off due to having to make cut backs at work. My lease runs out in NYC in a month and if I don’t have a job I have to leave bc as you guys might know….NYC is crazy expensive. I am so confused as to whether I want to stay or leave, etc. I am not opposed to moving and trying a different location and new experience. So as of now…I am taking the road of….if I am offered a job in a different location….I am there! Does anyone know a good website or a good way to try and find photography jobs? I know Craigslist ( but that you need to select a specific location)…but is there another possible way of locating jobs that I am looking over? Any advice on location or sites, etc. would be much appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.
I feel sorry for people such as yourself. You spend years studying, are likely not warned at all about the difficulties in finding work involving photography, blunder out into the world and wonder why people are not beating a path to your door. Unfortunately these are the times we live in and with the advent of digital technology, price of affordable dslrs and family members who will work for free, the work of a photographer is not wanted by people who simply want everything for free these days. I see dozens of questions like yours a week and it is always sad to see, but like I said, it’s a sign of the times.
I’ll give you your answer but I don’t think you are going to like it. Find a new career. Pick a career which will guarantee you a wage every month, a career which is crying out for jobs and which will keep you in a job for life and guarantee you a good pension. In Dec 2008 I was made redundant and was forced to make a career choice. I had worked the previous 11 years in the automotive industry as a welder. I would have loved to make photography my full time job, photography is my passion, but I was sensible to see that it is going to be extremely difficult to do so, especially in the current climate, so I chose a career in healthcare. I am currently a care worker and I am doing my nursing degree in 2011. As well as being on a new and exciting career path which I absolutely love, I am safe in the knowledge that I am going to have work and infinite directions to turn for the rest of my life. I can move to any country and drop right into a job, plenty of career paths as a nurse, and after all, people are always going to need looking after!, I have a job for life.
Anyway, I am not saying that you should do the same career path as me, I am saying that you need to use your head and have a reality check. I still love my photography and I make some money on the side with it by selling prints. You could quite easily focus on a new career path, have a guaranteed wage every month from it and do your photography on the side in your spare time and make some extra money from doing family portraits, hell you could even open a little home studio at the weekends!. I am not trying to disillusion you here about your photography, I am just being realistic and giving you some advice. You may well have to swallow your pride to do what I recommend, but just think about this… Jobs in photography are getting fewer and fewer each year, it is getting harder and harder to run your own photography business and the vast majority fail in their first year. If it is hard now then imagine what it is going to be like in 10 years time, even 20 years time. Every year more and more photography students being churned out of universities waving their degrees in the air and saying “What exactly am I supposed to do with this now?”..
I am certain that you are still quite young, the sooner you start on this new career path then the sooner you will understand just how important this change is. By the time you qualify photography jobs will be even harder to obtain but that will not matter any more, you will have your new secure job and making a little money on the side with your photography.
I wish you the best of the luck, like I said, you may not like my answer but it is the most down to Earth answer I can give.

How To Become a Fashion Photographer

Photographer in NYC for Small Wedding?
We’re getting married in NYC in about 5 weeks. In total, we will only have 16 or 18 people in attendance. I’m looking for a photography student, or a grad student in photography who might lend a creative edge to photo journalism shots. We’re not young, so I’m not interested in anything remotely “Barbie” or “Disney-esque”. It’s not a big job but could be kind of a cool job for someone with a great eye. Ideas, anyone? Please reply. Thanks in advance.
I am a NYC wedding photographer and photojournalist, but admittedly high-end. It is very difficult to find the type of work you are looking for unfortunately. Most of the good photojournalist photographers
have to make a living and charge appropriate fees to cover the ever changing computer programs, hi-end equipment, post processing time, and of course, their artistry.
Maybe you could post something at the School of Visual Arts, but you cannot expect any professional work without paying $2000+ usually in NYC.
Bella Pictures has some inexpensive basic packages, but you should be careful to check which photographer they offer.
