What to choose for a career?
I’m a junior in high school and I don’t know what on earth to do with my life. I definitely plan on going to college but I have absolutely no idea what to study. I have spent hours upon hours searching the web and taking career quizzes but I still don’t know what to do. I just can’t seem to picture myself doing anything. I have been researching quite a bit about journalism but everyone seems to say what a crap career it is. I don’t really have a passion for anything in school because it’s all just boring busy work. Should I just get a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and see where it takes me?
Some interests: tennis (not as a player), photography, editing, writing, animals, traveling, other cultures.
Any advice or suggestions?
This is not advice, it is a direct ORDER! Don’t let anyone talk you out of what you want to do! You sound like me when I was a junior. I wanted to get a degree in either geology, astronomy, or archeology. Everybody, my parents, my guidance counselor, among others, told me that there weren’t many jobs in that area. I took the liberal arts route, and tried to get a job doing what others thought I should do. I did horribly in college. I couldn’t pass the courses in which I had no interest. I tried enrolling into physical geography when I was a sophomore and my advisor told me I CAN’T pass that course, I’m not smart enough. I took it anyway and easily got an A.
College is about doing what YOU want to do. If you want to be a journalist, do it. Those that advise you DONT want to be journalist and they think those jobs are crappy. They are not you.
If journalism isn’t your game, become a photographer! My sister and I (she’s 40 and I’m 39) are just getting into photography. We love it and wished we had taken that route.
2 years ago, I started a new career in a field that I wanted to work in, which is editing film. I LOVE it. My life got sooo screwed up because I didn’t follow MY heart. The worst thing that can happen if you pick something you like is you might learn you don’t actually like it…Than you do something else. If you take a job in an area you are not enthused about, you KNOW you will not like it.
PLEASE follow my order and work in a killer job!
You will do better!
Oh, and I am about to cut a movie trailer that you will very likely see on television within the next few months. In 2 years I got to this point because it is something that I love to do.
