How much should I charge for photos that were published in a book?
is a book about Alzheimer's. the author wrote it as his thesis and his counselor told to be published, and is now published. She hired me to take pictures for the book of the elderly are different scenarios models for people with the disease. Not I'm sure how much to charge, although I have never made a picture of a book. will not be a best seller or something, but I do not think it's one of those things that she is paying to be published.
The author is in essence what you pay for your time and expertise. I estimate how long it will take all the photos (more time to prepare and landscape lighting in your case, plus any time spent in the darkroom or in Photoshop). Then multiply that by what I think which is a reasonable hourly rate. What is a reasonable price? What else can you do with that time? What other jobs are you qualified? You probably need to lower the rate it could gain from an employer, because – as far as I know – that have never paid for the photograph before. Your other option is to get some quotes from a few professional photographers charge and half or one third of what they want. If the author says it is too, could try to offer a fee lowest return for a share of the royalties – for example, 1% (the author typically gets 10%), but I think this book will not sell in large amounts to be missed. On the other hand, a low rate may be worth it for the experience and exposure of their work. I would like to make clear that the author of your budget is based on taking a number of photos and / or spend a certain amount of time at work. Tell him if you do a lot more because of the changes that the author or publisher wants you You may be charged extra. (Obviously, do not charge extra something that was not his fault.) I also like to ensure that everyone is clear who will own copyright of the photos. The author and / or publisher, you probably want, but you may be able to get away with licensing them. At least, they should insist that credit is given as a photographer in the book, and retaining the right to use photos in your portfolio (assuming the job as a professional photographer or want to work as one).
