what is the best nikon compatible lens for wildlife photography?

Hi I am an amateur photographer and I am looking for the best zoom lens for wildlife photography within my budget which is £400-700. I have looked at the new os sigma 150-500mm and think it is the best choice however i want to compare it to other before I make the decision to purchase. Thank you for your help!

Every time I am working and need my camera repaired by a local technician, when I go in and ask him his or her opinion of lenses, I always get a thumbs up for Tamron and Tokina, and a thumbs down for Sigma. Understand that you get what you pay for. Sigma lenses may make some decent images, but there are downsides. The quality is not that great, the lens may front-focus or back-focus, the lens is built poorly, there is a lot of sample variation (so although a lens may have a decent design, Sigma doesn’t have the factory capability to produce it correctly every time on an assembly line. If you buy a Nikon lens, you can buy it and not worry. If you buy Sigma, you have to go to the store and try a few to make sure that you are getting a good sample), etc.

Your best choice is to get something like an older 300mm f/4. This lens quality will destroy anything that Sigma make.

There is a difference. The differences may not be important in your case, but in general they are:

TOTAL image quality. For example, The 14mm Nikon megawide prime lens is sharper at all apertures than the Sigma 14mm prime lens… and I get a little chromatic abberation at 50% on the Sigma lens from about 2/3rds the way out from center… this is at f/11, not wide open! My Nikon 14mm has less chromatic abberation wide open than the sigma does at f/11.

Construction quality. The Sigma Lens fit feel and finish are excellent. But the focusing motor is noisier than the Nikon. Focus speed is slower too. Also I have found that the 3rd party lenses for the most part are not as durable. They usually develop problems much earlier than the Nikon lenses if you are a heavy shooter. My Tamron 24-70 focusing got noisy after about 3,000 shots or so… unusable at a wedding!! I threw it out (amazing how that lens sounded when thrown to a dumpster 100 feet away!) I replaced it with the Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 lens.,,, the sharpest zoom lens I have ever seen! Yes, the Nikon costs alot more… but if you do scenic fine art photography or weddings for a living, the price difference is worth it. The really important thing is… how important is ultimate image and construction quality to you? If you shoot less than 300 images a month, the third party lenses may be adequate for you… OR if you rarely make prints larger than 8 x 10 or 8.5 x 11, then the non-oem lens might work for you.

What’s the best lens configuration for general photography, both zoom and portrait–an 18-200?

Don’t answer if you don’t know. No cut and pastes.

If I had to take just one lens with me it would be my 24-70mm f/2.8. I can capture most things with this lens. However, if I could take one more it would be my 70-200 f/2.8 IS. That way I could reach out just a little further. (For what its worth I am shooting with a full frame digital camera. No up conversion so 24mm for me is 24mm not 38.)
