Can you please critique these photos?

These pics are taken by a twelve year old, which is me:

Lower Falls of Yellowstone

Bryce Canyon

Any suggestions for better photography?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry only two pictures. I have more than 500 pictures taken on my one week trip to Yellowstone. It’s a hard time uploading.

Yellowstone and Bryce are amazing places. I am glad you got to see them, and you have pictures for your album.

The first one is very colorful, really the color there is too saturated and does not look realistic. The picture of Bryce is a little washed out, and the horizon line is crooked. In landscapes the horizon needs to be straight. I have done a little adjustment on Bryce so you can see what I’m talking about.

Let me know when you have seen it, and I will remove it from Flickr.

Both of these photos would have been much better taken early in the morning or late in the afternoon. At those times of day, the shadows lend definition to form and the light is softer and less harsh. Sunrise and sunset are often called the “golden” hours for photography of landscapes or people, too. Of course, when traveling you can’t always be somewhere at sunset or sunrise and we have to take what we have,

Try www.kodak.com and www.betterphoto.com for tutorials and tips and great galleries of images to browse.

For 12 years old I think you are doing fine. Begin learning the technical and artistic stuff and keep practicing. One day you may be a fine photographer and we will line up to buy your work! Best wishes.

*EDIT*

I added a couple of my Bryce images from a trip several years ago. They are very much like yours. We also did Yellowstone on a trip, but I don’t have any images scanned from there.

Where can I photograph wolves?

I live in South Florida, just north of Fort Lauderdale. I’m a photography major and I would love to photograph wolves but I don’t really want to go all the way to Yellowstone… I’ve been searching the web for hours and can’t find anything. Any suggestions?

Other than visiting your local zoo, wolves are going to be rare in the Florida peninsula.

Here is one resource that may get you closer to your goal

What’s a good 5-day itinerary for Yellowstone if you are into photography and scenic drives (not hiking)?

I’d like to go sometime in June, and I need advice on which hotels I should make reservations for. Or does it make sense to stay in one hotel, and make daily trips from there?

I would recommend. Starting at Logan Utah passing through Logan Canyon. The East side of Logan Canyon is beautiful Bear Lake. The North Beach is great for swimming. You can also rent Personal Water craft here.Thirty miles north is Montpelier Id. Visit the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center

http://www.endoftheoregontrail.org/joomlaeotic/

From Montpelier you go through Star Valley Wy. On to Alpine Wy.
Here is where I recommend you take a detour that only locals would know about. At Alpine WY .for a great adventure rent an ATV at Alpine & ride the Greys river USFS Road 138 area. Greys River offers beautiful scenic views, wildflowers and lots of wildlife viewing. Of the fifty some miles the last ten requires some adequate ground clearance. In June you will not be able to drive all the way through to Smith Fork Road due to snow. Make sure to take the drive to Murphy Lakes in this area. Drive up as far as conditions permit. Then head back to Alpine WY..
Here is where the beautifull Snake River Canyon starts. Spend one night in Jackson WY. While in Jackson be sure to go to the Bar J Chuckwagon – Chuckwagon Supper and Western Show.

http://www.barjchuckwagon.com/index.htm

Be sure and float the Snake River in a large rubber raft starting point is Jackson. Of course you need to spend a couple days in Yellowstone Park. The places not mentioned I would make sure to visit is The Grand Canyon Of Yellowstone. Of course every visitor to Yellowstone has to see Old Faithful Geyser. You can bet every visitor to Yellowstone will be there too. My last visit to Yellowstone was in May of 2007. Even then it was fairly busy. Don’t expect to see any bears, but the bison will be everywhere. On our last visit we ran into a buffalo jam of them walking down the roadThe roads in Yellowstone actually make a figure eight & you could easy take in all the senic places in two days.
After visiting Yellowstone Park exit through the Northeast Entrance, which leads you to Beartooth Pass.
The Beartooth Highway is an All-American Road that has been called “the most beautiful drive in America,” by late CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt. Due to heavy snowfall at the top, the pass is usually open each year only from Memorial Day in late May through Labor Day in September.
From Bertooth Cody Wy & The Buffalo Bill Historical Center is your next destination. One day is all you need there & head back into Yellowstone by way of the East entrance & out the south entrance heading back to Jackson Hole once more.
If time permits after your second time through Jackson, at the Hoback Jct go toward Pinedale Wy & The Green River Lakes. Some of the drive to the lake isn’t that scenic. Once you get to the Lake you will enjoy the beauty that surround you.
