What are some great photography techniques, tips and tricks?
Lighting…Angles…Shadows…Contouring….Posing…A look
Perfect Picture
Ok first off, a flash does not get rid of shadows. Its purpose is to light your subject properly at the correct exposure. You can still shoot into the sun without a flash, if its turning out dark it means you metered on the sun and not your subject. Sometimes people want there subject to be dark and not lit to create a silhouette effect. Lens filters are nice to use but I would recommend not using them and doing post editing in Photoshop. If you want different looks, try not to shoot at eye level with your subject so much as a lot of photographer tend to do. Go low, go high, turn your camera at an angle etc. If you have any studio strobes, play around with the lighting, try using 1 light, 2 or 3 lights and see the different outcomes you get. If you want more of a Rembrandt look try using 1 studio strobe or window light coming from one side. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have tips on photography for musicians?
I’m not used to doing photography for anything much more than models or fashion magazines but last night i got a call from a rapper wanting me to do his album cover and some media shots. I’ve never done anything of this sort before and he wasn’t very specific in what he wanted so i’m just wanting to know if anyone has some tips on what to expect and possibly what they could be looking for…like what makes a good album cover and what kind of angles and lighting could work well for a rapper or any type of musician.
In general rap style is going to be high contrast, low key, maybe street photography. What is really important with a musician though is something that represents them. You should listen to his music, talk with him about his message, ask for sample images he likes, then compose the your images. What you are doing is a visual reinforcement to what he wants to express and the attention to that will be appreciated.

I am looking for any lighting tips (amateur photography) for shooting clothing on models?
I am just starting in Photography and one area i am trying out is fashion photography for catalogues and publication. I am not schooled in lighting and would like to find out tips and tricks on how to get good all round light and eliminate shadows on the photos. Sometime I will be shooting outdoors and sometimes on location.
The thing with fashion photography is to blast the models with light. That usually consists of two highpowered lights, one on each side of the model about 45 degrees between them and you.
Feather the lights across the face to blow out any shadows. The lights should be at roughly a 30 degree angle from their forehead (imagine there is a perpendicular line coming out of their head and one creating a plane at their forehead… the 30 degrees is between those two lines).
This will create a nice high cheekbone feel on the models and eliminate harsh shadows on the clothes while still proving a somewhat depth of field to whatever appearel they are wearing.
You can also add a fill light (an umbrella light) directly to the side of you (about an arms lenght) that is 1 – 1 1/2 stops lower than the two main lights. This will eliminate all shadows on the clothing and provide a flat, but well lit product.
