Best DSLR and Lens for amateur Surf Photography?

Canon Vs Nikon? Or, any other brand!! I’ve read a lot of reviews for both type and it just leaves me unclear. I do have a budget (under 1500.00) however, I just need to educate myself first before investing. I was thinking of investing on a Nikon D60 or D80. IMPORTANT NOTE: I’m an amateur so this will be my first SLR! Any websites, reccomendations will be helpful pretty please!! :-)

canon v nikon?
lol… you cant go wrong with dslr’s from those brands.
just remember that lenses are not interchangable between brands so you are buying into a lens system not just a camera body.

stick with OEM lenses and shy away from third party brands. they are generally inferior to canon and nikon in optical quality and not as durable. make sure you put a $5 UV filter on every lens you buy and never take it off. replacing a scratched filter is cheaper than replacing a lens.

for surfing photos you will want a fast (fstop 2.8 or less) telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range and a monopod to help steady the camera.

Question for professional photographers: How did you get started in photography? More….?

I have been bitten by the “photography” bug and have been thinking about doing it professionally on the side. Since I have no formal training whatsoever, I’m looking into taking photography classes. In the meantime, what is a good book and/or websites to get familiar with equipment, camera functions, etc. Also, I have read great reviews of the Canon Rebel XT. Is this a good beginner’s camera? Can I take professional quality pics with it? Any info & advice is greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks for your valuable answers!!! I really appreciate it!

You can take professional pictures with a point-and-shoot. Well, almost. I keep one on hand to take pictures of my setup on a shoot.

I’ve been doing photography as a hobby for many years. I got into professional (getting paid for it) because I was disgusted with the quality (low) and the price (high) for my daughter’s school pictures. So I started taking them. Then others wanted to know where we’d gotten those pictures done, so they asked me to take shots of their kids….. Kinda snowballed from there.

You may want to see if there are any photography schools or colleges with photography classes in your area and see if they offer workshops on lighting. Could help a lot. There are a lot of books out there, too, but hands-on experience and pressing that shutter button a lot are a lot better educators.

Canon Lens ?????????

I would like to buy a camera lens to add to my Canon Rebel Xsi. It came with the 18-55mm kit lens. Some reviews and websites that I have read like the 50mm prime lens. Why is that? Is there really lots of difference in the quality of the picture? They both have a focus range at 50/55mm. I am a bit confuse on this one. I like portrait photography and sport/figure skating. Would the 55-250mm, 100mm prime or the 50mm prime be better? Need your help to make a choice. Thanks!!

The 50mm prime (fixed focal length} lens won’t give you anything you don’t already have except the ability to shoot hand held under lower light conditions and since you can set the ISO on your camera as high as 1600 if you need to, that is rather a moot point. Also, the 50mm prime lenses available do not offer image stabilization which is a feature that comes built into the lens you have now.
If you want to do portrait photography your thoughts on the 55 – 250mm lens are on the right track and under reasonable lighting conditions it is also great for sports/figure skating.
Although I use a 5D Canon in my business, I have an XTi which I use for pleasure and when I prefer to carry lighter weight equipment. On it I use the EFS 10-22mm, the 18-55mm IS, and the 55-250mm IS lenses and between these 3 lenses you should be able to easily take all picture situations the average photographer would actually be interested in!
Hope this helps…
