What is the best backdrop for a photography studio?

I am setting up a studio in my house and want to know your views and advice on the merits of the best material? I have looked in muslin, paper and vinyl. What is the most professional looking? I use only one black and one white for infants and children. Thanks I have also carpeted, not proper role?

Perki is more or less spot on. I mainly use muslin (needs steam ironing clothes before use if you want without wrinkles). Occasionally the use of vinyl and used paper.
