Am I allowed to charge people for my photography?
I’ve always loved taking pictures and a few months ago i started a myspace to showcase some of my work. I never charged anyone before, but lately a lot of people have been asking me how much I charge for this and that and usually I don’t take pics for other people. i noticed though a lot of myspace photographers do and they do charge a lot. i was wondering if I could do the same and what are the rules and regulations about this. I have no schooling in photography and no license…do i need them to sign a model release form and if so where do I get one? Any help is appreciated.
If you are going to charge people, then you sort of need a business licence to pay taxes on the income. There are a lot of photogs who don’t Some just file it with their incomce tax as Misc. income, like a waitress with tips.
How much to charge depends on your area of what the market will handle and how good your work is. People won’t pay good money for an amatuer who doesn’t know how to work their camera. Pretend your a customer and call other photographers in the area asking how much they charge. You’ll know what the price range is.
For my area L.A., I charge $125 for portraits(one person), $175 for a couple and $250 for group shots. They get an 8X10. For modeling portfolios it;s $600 and they get a CD of the photos I shot. Weddingd $2000 for the shoot the wedding and they get web hosting.

It does not make any difference how much lipstick you put on a pig, it is still just a pig. Or, you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. If your original picture is bad, what ever you do with photoshop will not help it much.
