Photography as a medium and art form?
Hey there everyone!
I need some help with a uni assesment im currently working on which asks us to evaluate how we understand photography as a medium and art form. Could any photography buffs lend me ur knowledge on this sunject im having a difficult time find information.
The assesment also asks us to evaluate a quote by photographer man ray which reads “of course, there will always be those who look only at technique, who ask ‘how’,while others of a more curious nature will ask ‘why’. personally i prefer inspiration to information”.
If any one could put forward their thoughts on this in relation to photography/art that would also b greatly appreciated!
cheers!
This is an assignment that asks for a subjective answer from the student. Photography’s very legitimacy as a true art form is still debated regularly even here on YA. Personal opinion, Photography deals with capturing light, more than subjectively interpreting vision, and thus begins the debate. Even though there are myriad techniques both in traditional photography and digital to interpret a vision. People claim Photography isn’t a true art form because you use a mechanical device to produce your image and thus you are not fully in control of producing that image. Your talent as an artist is not fully enmeshed in the image you capture.
Any photographer who has waited for the light to be just right, or has labored hours on end to produce an image that captures the image he has in his minds eye knows that is not true. Any photographer who has tested gazillions of rolls of film to get the one that captures his image with the color just right knows that this is not the case.
Sure we use a mechanical device. But we have full control of that device, and how to use it for the image we want.
Man Ray was a very outrageous photographer who delighted in pushing the envelop so to speak and created images that were somewhat in your face and broke many traditional “rules”
of photography. But he was hardly the only one who had a talent for getting away with breaking rules. His ability for creating images that relied on inspiration made him a leader in the art. there have been photographers, when asked for their philosophy on taking a good picture mearly said “Stand where the view is best”. One of my instructors I think said it best when she said remember that the traditional “rules” of photography are not really rules they are really more like suggestions.
My opinion again? To me photography is what I make of it. Sometimes a snapshot to record a moment is fine, and other times I’ll spend hours waiting for the light or some other part if an image to be just what I want. It keeps me sane sometimes, and really there’s probably more inspireation in asking both why, and why not, too. How just means you get a well exposed image.

How much $ can I get for taking photos of a wedding?
*How much I can be paid for taking pictures of a wedding?*
I imagine at least $100. There are certain considerations, so read the backstory:
I’ve never done any professional photography. Digital has been a hobby of mine for 7 years, since I was a teenager. I’ve just done family photos, nature, animals, flowers, etc. I like to think I have an eye. My latest camera is just a Nikon Coolpix P50.
A few days ago an acquaintance called me, asking if I’d do her boyfriend’s mother’s wedding in June. It’s at the bride’s home, which is on the river. A local pro (small town area) quoted them $3,000 and that was too much for them. They know I’m not a pro, I’m completely honest about my inexperience. I’ve told them what camera I have and sent them some of my photos. We’re still talking, still learning details. Also, my printer is nice for family photos, so I’d probably just burn the images onto a disc for them.
Thanks in advance!
Unless all they want are snapshots, then decline to shoot. The first wedding question has been asked a lot here on YA. There are all sorts of considerations when deciding whether or not to shoot, but if this bride has already looked at professional work and wants the same but cheaper you will be in for a ride. Honestly, no matter how talented you are, you are unlikely to produce portfolio worthy images your first time out. Your Coolpix is an all right camera for snapshooting, and even more some types of serious work, but it just isn’t cut out for weddings. You will have no way to control DOF. Also you need backup equipment.
If you decide to go ahead with it, make sure to show the bride some great wedding photographer websites, then tell her, “This is what you WON’T be getting from a first time amateur, are you sure you’re OK with that?” Then don’t charge. If they want to tip you, accept it gracefully. Make sure you control expectations and make no promises. In fact, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to write up a simple contract stating what your experience is and that you don’t guarantee any results and they are proceeding at their own risk.
Then prepare as much as you can. Surf the wedding websites to see examples of what is current in wedding photography. Study the images closely for lighting and composition. Practice the posing with some friends or family. Visit the venue beforehand if you can to see the lighting and make some plans on where you want to shoot. Shadow a real wedding photographer if possible. Things at weddings happen quickly, so have spare batteries and be prepared. Many things you will only have one chance to get the shot. You will have to have a backup camera of some sort, even a film P&S or digicam. Have lots of extra memory and shoot lots. Afterwards, edit your images before presenting them to the B&G. Take out any that are completely wanky, out of focus, severely off in exposure etc. Many people shot their first wedding for friends or family members who could not afford pictures any other way, so it can be done. I hope you have a great experience and the B&G and you are pleased with the outcome.
