Switching my major from photography to production design?
I’m currently a sophomore at scad and since freshmen year i’ve been a major in photography, but up until recently i’ve realized that I really don’t see myself as being a photographer as a career. However I love production design, i was involved with building sets and doing behind the stage work in theater in high school and i loved it. So my question is, is there a lot of work in the production design business? What kinds of jobs can you get?
The beauty of learning production design is it opens a number of other career paths as well. I suggest having a VERY strong background in architecture before considering going into production design. It’s key that you know how to draft, it’s the way designers communicate.
Having a background in photography is also a huge plus. You’ll find yourself designing for the camera, (or audience if you work in theatre) which is a great asset.
Personally, I have had difficulty breaking into production design. The film industry is very much a close knit group, it’s crucial that you know someone working in the industry. Also, it’s key that you have a confidence and likeabilty to you. If you have trouble working with others or making friends, it will be that much more difficult for you. A production designer is someone who must be respected, you must have confidence in your vision without being obnoxious.
As far as jobs, craigslist.com always has a few production designer gigs every few days. You’ll meet some of the strangest people getting work through craigslist, but sometimes it pays off. Most often, it does not.
Try to find a production designer you respect and be persistent in contacting them. Let them know you’d like to learn, and show them ways that you could help. Don’t expect compensation, and don’t expect it to pay off often, but if it does, it can be huge.
And finally, if the work doesn’t come and you’re looking for something to do, consider doing interior design for residential clients, consider landscape design, consider theater design, there are many paths you can look to once you have that basic skill set.

How do major in photography in a major university?
Hi. I am currently a high school junior and I have started looking at colleges. I’ve always wanted to study math or physics in college, but this past year I’ve picked up photography and now I want to do a double major in both. I’m looking at schools like stanford, harvard, columbia, georgetown, carneigie mellon..etc I know some of these schools have fine arts or art history major, but how can you have a concentration in photography? I’m afraid that being an art major will be very hard for me since I have not taken a lot of art classes in HS. what schools have a rather liberal art department where I can take mostly photography classes?

search on photography- you should get at least 290 hits- with MANY large universities and art schools. Contrary to the above, Photography is a popular and booming college major and career choice. Best of luck to you!
