Photography for beginners….where to start?

I just bought a Canon Rebel XSI. Photography has always fascinated me and I wanted to learn more advanced techniques other than point and shoot. I wanted to take a class, but my work schedule does not allow that. Therefore, I have to learn on my own. I started going through the book and it is very overwhelming. I’m experimenting as I read. Any books, magazines, dvds, or websites out there that are very simple for beginners such as myself? Or any other suggestions would be helpful.
I’m referring more to the actual functions of the camera and how to use those options. I am currently reading the manuel, but it is like reading Chinease.

I agree that those manual feel overwhelming at first, I felt that way myself.
However, you really have no choice – you HAVE to work your way through it, otherwise you miss out of far too much.
Do it one little bit at a time, look up things you don’t understand (thank heavens for the internet), and practice as you go along.

Years later, I still take out my manual every now and then and often discover something I had forgotten, or overlooked, or not understood fully the last time I’d looked at it.

Learning about photography in general will help you understand the terms and concepts in your manual.

Just look around…… we have access to stunning amounts of help and resources.

Snobbery in photography?

After using yahoo answers for a couple of years, and regularly checking the photography section I cant help but notice that makes such as Pentax and Olympus are usually overlooked. Most of the advice given to people asking questions such as ‘What DSLR would you recommend for a beginner photographer’ and ‘What make of SLR is the best’ are usually pointed in the direction of Nikon or Cannon (and occasionally Hassleblad). In my opinion this is the result of most photography magazines only featuring the Nikon and Cannon cameras, but no other makes.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t buy Cannons or Nikons, but people should also consider other makes.

It’s not always the equipment, its the person behind it.
I disagree with some of you – I own the Pentax K100D, and I don’t think that the quality is any better than Canon’s K400D (apart from the Megapixels).
Have a look at my pictures at: http://www.jdwphoto.co.uk/page2.htm

I’ve seen this many times over 18 years as a professional but I’ve never yet met anyone who can identify the camera and lens from the printed end result unless the odds have been stacked, such as comparing a 3mp compact with a 22mp Sinar. And such people are so few and far between that it really underlines that this is typically way beyond what the customer can discern… and they are the only critical part of the exercise for any professional!

The fact is that photography is like motor racing – most cameras now are far in advance of what was available 20 or 30 years ago but the users are still typically unable to use the equipment to within a fraction of its performance.

So you are 100% right – people are snobs and few can use their equipment well… if you are photographing, someone will typically come up and comment that you must be a pro if you have a big expensive bit of kit, or sneer if you are using something adequate but not as good as their kit.

Most people would be far better advised to invest more in their skills than in their camera equipment, they’d get a far better return for their investment…

I’ve never, ever heard someone look at an image and say “look at that, obviously a Canon / Nikon photograph, isn’t that marvellous – you can always tell their quality can’t you?”.
