I need help with career choices..?

I have no idea what I want to do yet… I like photography but there’s no way I could make a living off of that, I like to edit pictures.. like to put in a magazine or something? Any jobs for that? Or maybe even writing magazine articles. I want a job that I can make a steady income with. I really love science and space, but I don’t really know about that either. And staging would be fun.. but I’m just not sure. What do you guys think? Which do you think would have better income?
Dear, I suggest you stop advertising.
Oh and I love to make and build things and figure things out.
I’m 14 and going to be a Freshman.

Ok, I’ll try and be as helpful as possible, but it would help if I knew how old you were…

Photography: I’ve known several photographers in my life and one of my girlfriends was an aspiring one, so I have a bit of experience (not personal, but what people have told me.) Basically, unless you’re an amazing photographer, you won’t be employed by anoyone. Most photographers are freelance and they earn a living by selling their pictures to magazines/newspapers. More artistic types will attempt to get a gallery exhibition of their photographs and sell them to individuals. The money is intermitant, and you can never be sure (unless you’re an established artist) of when your next pay check is going to be. Its a very challenging job choice and not much of a career (ie career infers that you have a progression.. something of a corporate ladder to ascend over the years).

Magazine Writer:My sister originally started out writing for magazines, although she’s moved to a different sector now. Basically, if you want to make it within that sector, you’re going to spend the first few years building your experience and network/portfolio by writing on a ‘pro bono’ basis, probably for a free publication. Not a single Magazine/newspaper/recruitment agency will recruit someone without relevant writing experience. So, this is where your age comes into play. If you’re still in high school, I suggest you start working for your school’s paper. When you get to University, you should try and get an internship with a Newspaper or Magazine or Publishing house. Again, during the first few years you won’t be paid, and when you do, the salaries aren’t that great and the hours (at least for serious newspapers) are long! job wise, its really interesting and very social and there is also career progression (ie Writer, Staff writer, Editor…etc.).

Science: Wow…. well you have to be specific here. Biology, Chemistry, Physics? Those are also very vague, as each of those branch out considerably. In truth I don’t have much knowledge about this, with exception of a friend of mine who is doing a PHD in Chemistry. He’s basically aiming for one of those giant Pharmaceutical companies. In which case, he’ll ahve a VERY good salary and a clear coporate career structure to progress. Having said that, you need to study A LOT and be very good to get a good job at a pharmaceutical company.

Space: Again, this is vague. If you’re talking about Astro-physics, you’ll lead a life of studying, researching and mainly working on government grants. There is no career prospects and I suppose the salary is adequate. The money won’t be great, but I suppose you’ll be doing something you really enjoy. On the other hand, there is a new field called Spacial Economics which sounds exciting and I also have a friend who has done a masters in that field and now works for NASA. There is a good salary, great career prospects and its a new field, so everything is very exciting, especially with so many potential business investors interested in space turism.

Hope I’ve helped you a bit!

Good luck!

What are some good photography magazines?

Iam looking to subscribe to a magazine that is pretty easy to read, I am just starting to get into photography so Something that is good for beginners. Looking for topics on, Posing, Tips on getting better shots. Etc. Also it would be nice if there were some article on basic terms. Like ISO and meters? I have an idea what they mean, but its still pretty foreign to me.
And they have to be available to Canada.
