I have seen a lot of adds for Photography Studio Fluorescent Lighting Kits. How do these compare with strobes?

I have read several reviews stating that they are outstanding. I have always used natural light but moved to utah and now have to shoot indoors? Has anyone used both and if so what do you recommend ?

One problem with fluorescent lights is that if you’re using more than one light you can have a difference in light temp. Even with two identical bulbs from the same manufacturer. As fluorescent bulbs age the color temp changes as well. Generally they are close enough that it won’t cause big problems with color cast but it’s a possibility. Makes nailing down WB a little more work.
Another problem, at least for the model, arises when you don’t use a modifier. The constant light can result in an unintentional squint from your subject.
And one more. If you have too much or to little light from a strobe you can adjust the output without moving the lights to gain or lose light. With constant lights you have to either 1)modify the light source, 2)move the light source (if you have the room but you should know that the apparent size of the light changes the quality and the distance effects fall off) or 3)adjust your shutter speed to change the amount of ambient you’re capturing.
They are a cost effective light source but usually for a little more money you can get a set of inexpensive low power strobes that work fine for indoor solo or very small group portraits.
One advantage to using a constant light source is that you can see before taking a photo exactly what kind of light you have and adjust it to your liking.
Not sure if you can tell but I’m a fan of strobes. Clean, consistent and easily controlled light.

Photography lighting/umbrella question? need help!?

I am very into photography and trying to build a small studio in my basement. I purchased a cowboy studio 2 umbrella strobe lighting kit and received it today. I went to play around with it and take some pictures of my son but when I put it on a manual setting the bottom half of the screen is black! Do I have defective equipment or am I doing something wrong??? I am not familiar with this kind of lighting at all, I like to teach myself these things but I just can’t figure this out! Frustrated!

Your sync speed in incorrect. Your camera needs to be in either manual mode, or shutter priority. Manual is best. Your camera manual will tell you the maximum sync speed you can use, although you may get 1/3rd-2/3rds stop faster if you experiment. The maximum sync speed with be somewhere between 1/30th to 1/250th, depending on your specific camera. You don’t have to shoot at that speed, anything lower will also work. You use shutter speed to control ambient light, the faster the shutter speed, the less ambient light you get. If the flashes are the only light source, you can use any shutter speed up to and including max sync. Use aperture to control depth of field.

You cannot shoot in an auto exposure mode, because the camera has no idea the flashes are present, and will not allow for them in the exposure.

What is a good affordable 3 point light kit to purchase for studio photography in Canada?

I’ve gone through media training so I know all about journalism photography but want to start my own studio. I know the basics of 3 point lighting but not what brands are the best. Can you guys help me out?
What is the best bang for my buck essentially in Canada and where can I find it? Thanks!

Check out Ebay. There are tons of strobe kits on sale there, with and without background stands and backdrops. Prices are affordable, not a lot of big name recognition, but compared to Alien Bees or something like that, you can get a whole kit for the price of a simple strobe. Its kind of a disposable type kit. Look for replaceable bulbs and flashes, its usually in the listing if it does have them. Really starting out, you can find something that won’t break you but will give you the capacity to do some decent portraits. Its not about the name on the lights anyway. Good Luck.
