What camera would you get if you were just getting into Photography?

I’m looking to get into photography as a weekend hobby what would be a good camera to start out with?. I have a $900 dollar budget to work with. I was thinking about the D60 with the Vr Lens kit and then I want to save up for a good Macro lens.

You are right, I recommend getting the D60 with the 18-55mm VR lens. This is a great dSLR.

Also, you may get the 55-200mm VR for a long tele zoom lens, or the new 35mm f/1.8 AF-S for a low-light normal lens, or a SB-600 (or SB-400) for a more flexible external flash unit (for example: bounced flash).

You will not be able to get a macro (nikon calls them “micro”) lens with that budget. The less expensive for this camera, the Nikon 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro-Nikkor, costs about $500. Almost the price of the camera body with the kit lens.

Best entry remote flash photography kit for Skating and BMX?

I want to get into shooting photos of skaters or BMXers at night or indoor skateparks with poor lighting. I know there are some slave lights out there, but i dont know where to start. I want to be able to have flashes go off from multiple angles when i shoot.

I want to do more photography in natural lighting. Does anyone have some simple tips?

I am new at this and should read the book to my camera (Canon Rebel XT) so I better understand ISO and things. I want to start shooting more outside and the only thing I know about it is its best early morning or evening. Are there any good and easy books out there or websites that I can read more about photography. I am also in the process of purchasing a lighting kit and need to know more about them also. Please HELP!!!

Ok I’m guessing that you mean outdoor portraits. S I will offer things for that and if I am wrong forgive me. You are right about the golden hour at sunset and the morning hours being the best time to shoot. Most people do not look flattering in harsh strong light of midday. There are of course exceptions to this when you more dramatic lighting. When you are shooting at other than optimal times use the shade. Reflectors, diffusion panels and gobos can help here. Even in indirect light be cafeful about bright highlighted areas. If you can’t avoid harsh lighting use the shadow on the persons face to advantage turning the face to be in the shadow and using your cameras flash for fill lighting can often help here. Be careful not to have “Raccoon eyes”, Squinty subjects or uneven, dappled light on faces (usually when shooting where there’s folliagethat doesn’t totally block sunlight)

Be aware of your background. You do not want it to take away from the photo or draw attention away from the model. Use a longer focal length for a narrower angle of view to help focus on the subject Use larger aperature to reduce your depth of field again bringing more attention to the subject

As to the lighting kit If you want to do outdoor as well as indoor think about using several high quality stobes they can be used with softboxes umbreallas etc. If you do want a traditional studio lighting set shop around for one that is at least 500 W 2 lights minimum you need solid stands, umbrealla and if they are not shoot through a soft box

I leanred that there were 7 main types of lighting but since then I have seen several others and some that I learned called different names

I learned shadowless, butterfly, loop, Rembran, split, broad and . In shadowless the main and fill are at equal power and usually at around 45 degrees on each side of the subject
Butterfly lighint the key light is placed high with the fill light directly under it. Keeping the light close to the subject, watch for the butterfly shaped shadow to form under the nose. Be careful not to place their eyes in shadow. The fill light is placed at roughly head height and can be accompanied or replaced by a reflector under the face to lighten the shadows under the chin and lower cheek.The fill key ratio varies depending on the contrast you want

Loop lighintg is done placing the key light at about 15 degrees to the subjects face and high enough to cast the shadow from the nose at a downward angle

Rembrant lighting gives a more dramatic look by using no fill and the main at a 45 degree angle aimed just a little down on the subject

Slit light is similar but with the angle more acute sometimes as much as 90 degrees

Broad lighting the main light illuminates the side of the subject’s face turned toward the camera — the broad view. It tends to flatten the illusion of depth and de-emphasize her facial features. Nevertheless, it is useful for widening an overly thin face.

short lighting as the name implies is the opposite you move the light to the side of the face away from the camera to get short or narrow lighting. It narrows round faces and brings out the contours much better than broad lighting

I know there are other ways to describe these and other techniques. You can had background, rim and hair lights to all of these
