How much should I charge for my photography?

I’m photographing a local canal festival in a few weeks. I’m a photography student and am not sure how much to charge when it comes to invoicing them afterwards. A fellow student said £10 an hour is reasonable due to all of the editing to be done after. I should mention, the people I’m doing the work for want exclusive copyright to all of the images so they can reprint as and when they wish. Any ideas on a reasonable fee to charge? This is my first paid job but I don’t want to undersell myself. I know I’m capable of producing professional, high quality images.

Doesn’t matter whether you are a student or not. If they want you to do the job then they should pay proper rates.

You could offer a day rate for the photography & editing and then license the images after that.

You say they want “all” the images with exclusive rights.
That comes expensive and as you have no idea what exactly they will be used for then you should be charging top price for this.

It is quite possible that the images you take could well be used (sold) by you for other publications and purposes in the future but giving away the exclusive rights would prevent this.

Either try and work out a non-exclusive deal or a deal where you know exactly what they will be using them for and you will be free to use them for other things.
For instance, they may just want them for publication and advertising purposes so you retain the right to sell prints to individuals.
Or
You should charge a rate which would reflect any potential sales you might have had of prints or possible future publication.

Personally I would not do an exclusive rights deal for this sort of event and I most certainly would not be selling the copyright.
