How much should a freelance photographer charge?
I am a signed photographer with a company in San Francisco and I recently met an art gallery curator at an event I was shooting. She would like me to shoot some of her gallery openings and she wants to know how much I charge. Since I am somewhat new to professional photography I do not know how much I should charge? I was thinking of shooting the first event for free to give her a chance to review the photos and decide if she’d like me to shoot for her again, is this a good idea?
One thing you should learn, never ever ever charge or take a bad rate just to get the job. It ruins the market, gives you a reputation as a cheap photographer, and is a waste of your time. The first question here is how good are you? Can you turn out usable images in a variety of conditions no matter what? Do you have the equipment and training to do the job justice? If so then go ahead and charge what you need to live. I charge $200 an hour and Ive been shooting for four years. But I am always pushing myself to be better and hold myself to very high standards because I believe that especially these days photographers need to retain credibility. Do not do the event for free. Would you go to a store and ask for free food so that you can try it and then if you like it you can pay? Heck no! She is asking for your services which you spend money and time perfecting so you should charge what you are worth. Doing this for free is like saying you have no confidence in yourself and dont really value your skills.
