Trying to learn about photography (aka noob)?
I’m interested in picking up photography as a hobby, so I picked myself up a Nikon D3000 as it was recommended to me as a decent starter camera. Having absolutely no experience with photography aside from using a point and click camera, I am wondering if anybody can recommend any books or websites that cater to the novice. The few magazines and websites I’ve looked at all cater to photography buffs and are way over my head, and a lot of the forums seem almost antagonistic towards noobs.
Figured I should elaborate a little: I’m in the Marines right now, and being a grunt they don’t really encourage us to seek a formal education on our free time haha. I’ve been taking photos of some of our training events using the guide mode on the camera, but when it comes to manually changing the settings, it baffles me (particularly aperture).
For now, my main resources are the internet and whatever books I can order online (currently deployed out of the country).
Good book for beginners on exposure is Bryan Peterson’s ‘Understanding Exposure’;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Exposure-Photographs-Digital-Camera/dp/0817463003/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1274880301&sr=8-1
Also have a good read of your camera’s manual & try to understand the basic functions (adjusting shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance).
Digital costs nothing in terms of looking at the results, so practice, review & practice again.
Edit to add: Mmm…I see your problem! Do you know anyone in your unit who’s into photography who could explain it? I can write a basic description of how exposure works, but sometimes its best to have someone to ask so you can go over bits you don’t understand.
Basically, three things control exposure – ISO, aperture & shutter speed. You can think of all of them being able to be set in ‘stops’. Your camera will often have 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop adjustments, but thinking in terms of whole stops is easier to start with. Each difference in stops doubles or halves the light entering the camera;
Aperture (f number) whole stops: 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22. This is the hole in the lens that controls how much light is let in. The smaller the number the bigger the hole. It also affects the depth of field (how much of your image is in focus, apart from the point of focus). A wide aperture (f1.4 or f2.8) will give a shallow depth of field (subject in focus & foreground/background blurred).
Shutter speed whole stops: 1 sec, 1/2 sec, 1/4 sec, 1/8 sec, 1/15 sec, 1/30 sec, 1/60 sec, 1/125 sec, 1/250 sec, 1/500 sec, 1/1000 sec. Shutter speed controls how long the sensor is exposed to the light. Fast shutter speeds stop motion, slower speeds allow motion blur.
ISO whole stops 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400. ISO controls how sensitive the sensor is to light. The higher the number the more sensitive it is.
To maintain the same exposure under one ‘set’ of parameters, if you change one of them, you have to change the other (or a combination or both) by the same amount, but in the opposite direction (ie to increase or decrease the light).
For example, if your settings for a ‘good’ exposure are;
ISO 400, f16 @ 1/60 and you want to open up the aperture to f4 for a shallower depth of field (that’s a 4 stop increase in light exposure), you can;
- increase the shutter speed (decrease the light) by 4 stops (ie to 1/1000) and leave the ISO the same, OR
- increase the shutter speed by 2 stops (ie to 1/250) AND decrease the ISO (decrease sensitivity) by 2 stops to ISO 100.
