Using External Hard Drives to back up AND to store?

Hi,

I am currently in the process of setting up my photography business and I am looking into storage options for my images.

Is it possible to have two external hard drives set up for my mac?- One for storage, the second as a back up?

Is this easy to do? Are there any draw backs? I know that this will slow down the loading process, but I don’t think it should be to bad seeing that it’ll just be my lightroom 2 library that I keep on the drives.

Any advice/info is appreciated!

Photo Storage online?

I was wondering if you guys knew of a decent free or cheap place where I could do file storage. Basically, I have an external hard drive that is filling up like crazy because I store all my photography and stock photography. I don’t feel like backing them all up to DVD because I always poorly store my DVDs. I was just wondering if there was a cheap place to host photos so that me and my team can look at a centralized library.

I use SmugMug. It costs $39.95 per year, but they offer unlimited storage and sharing (if desired). I used to store my photos on Yahoo, but now that they’re closing down I had to find a new site. I did quite a bit of research and found that most of the free sites don’t give you unlimited storage, which was something I wanted. I’ve been very happy with them so far.

They also give their existing customers a “discount code” that they can pass along to their friends. People who sign up using one of these discount codes save $5.00 on their annual membership (and the existing member saves $10.00 on their next renewal). My code is 0AJwhH7Ik23Gg if you want to use it. :-)

Recommend me a hand-held light metre and external hard drive…?

I’m applying for a two year photography program for college, they require us to have an external hard drive and a hand-held light metre.

Suggest me a brand/type/etc of hand-held light metre to purchase!

Also, I don’t have a Macbook Pro (or experience with one) so I have to use one of theirs at the school they supply for the students, I have NO idea if I have to purchase a specific kind of external hard drive, or if they’re all universal…information on this and suggestions would be great!

Website links and/or prices would be nice too!

I use a Sekonic 308 and like it a lot. Nice size, great metering.

As for external hard drives, there are a lot of them around. For ease, I’d recommend getting one that’s USB powered (only one cable) and make sure it’s USB 2.0 (faster data transfer).

I personally like the Western Digital drives and picked up a 320GB Passport recently for under $100 on sale. I like the blue one. :D
