Photography Education And Training

First camera for someone who’s serious about photography?
My nephew has had his heart set on an art college and the school requires all applicants to submit several pieces of creative photography. He has no previous education or training in photography, but he is very serious about this application. He has signed up for photography lessons, but has yet to pick a camera for it. What type of cameras do you recommend for a newbie like him? It has to be of reasonable quality and relatively easy to use. Naming the brand and model no. will be very helpful.
BTW, please don’t say stuff like “he can just ‘borrow’ someone else’s work and pretend it’s his own,” like some of the respondents I read on another forum. He is really serious about his work and integrity.
He will need a camera capable of fully manual control, be it film or digital. If the school allows digital, that means any digital SLR camera.
I would suggest getting the most camera he can afford, meaning start looking in the middle range, not the bottom. Don’t let brand be a major deciding factor, they are all good. No matter what you read here, a Canon is not a better camera than a Pentax, they just sell more. If at all possible, HE needs to get someplace that has multiple bodies available, and get his hands on them. Ergonomics are just as important as anything else, and at the mid-grade, they are all pretty good. The Oly’s tend to be a little smaller, but not terribly much so.
Some ideas: Canon EOS 50D, or the new 7D. One of the 5D’s if the price isn’t out of reach. Nikon D90 or D300s. Pentax K20D. Sony A700 or A850! Oly E-30 or E-3.
All of these are in the middle ground of cameras, but capable of pro use. If you have big bucks, then a Nikon D3s or Canon 1DsMkIII would be fantastic, but for 7-8 Thousand dollars, they should be!
Don’t forget to add in the cost of lenses and whatever other gear he needs.. a Quantum flash system will set you back another $1,250 easily. The camera maker’s brand, best shoe mount flash will be around $500.
