1860′s cameras and photography?
I was watching C.S.I. last night with my family and on the show someone said that during the civil war a person had to hold still for Five (5) minutes to have their picture taken.
I said no way, by the 1860′s cameras were faster than that.
So.. how long was a exposure for a portrait in the mid 1800′s
Depending on the light, it was 1 to 3 minutes. (I have several cameras from before the turn of the century.) Unless you were indoors using lantern light (most shots were done outside) I can’t image it taking 5 minutes. The paper was far more light sensitive than they are giving it credit for.
