Photography Depth Of Field
Best all purpose lens for Rebel XT and depth of field?
To take action, portraiture and wedding photography. Obviously I know one lens can’t get it all, but I am looking for suggestions on the best all around lens that can do all of these things.
Also, I am having trouble with my rebel xt with increasing the depth of field. I am taking group shots and can’t seem to find the sweet spot to get the most out of the depth of field without it all being blurry. If I set the f stop to 7-8 or higher it just blurs out the whole image. Any help?
The Canon 24-70 mm f 2.8 is a superb all-around lens (and well made, as well), but it’s not so wide for your camera.

Use depth of field preview button to see if your current setting is “deep” enough, such as sample above.
Photography Depth Of Field

What does depth of field mean in photography?
Depth of Field (DOF) is considered that part of a scene that is in acceptable focus in front of and behind your subject. Three factors affect DOF:
1) The focal length of the lens.
2) The f-stop chosen.
3) Subject distance.
This site – http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html – explains DOF and has a DOF Calculator you can use to compute DOF for any combination of focal length, f-stop and subject distance imaginable.
Most people assume that if you’re using a wide-angle lens (14mm, 18mm) and focus to infinity at f16 then you’ll maximize your DOF. That isn’t necessarily true. Lets look at a couple of examples.
18mm @ f16 focused at 6′-0” DOF is from 2′-2” to infinity. Anything from 3′-10” in front of your subject (or 2′-2” in front of your camera) to as far as you can see – infinity – will be in focus. This is a good setting for landscapes.
18mm @ f16 focused to infinity DOF will be from 3′-4” in front of your camera to as far as you can see – infinity. We actually lose DOF here.
I recommend the ExpoAperture2 DOF Field Guide ( http://www.expoimaging.com ) since you can toss it in your camera bag and use it in the field.

For landscapes my goal is always to maximize the DOF. 21mm, 24mm lens @ f16 and “focus” set at 6′ using the distance scale on the lens.

100mm macro lens at (probably) f11. The longer the focal length the less your DOF.
Understanding Depth of Field

Which setting of the following gives the best depth of field during macro photography?
Go here: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html and use the DOF Calculator. You can easily compute the DOF for any combination of lens focal length, f-stop and subject distance. You’ll find that at very close focusing distances there is very little DOF regardless of lens focal length and f-stop.
