photography: Any tips on breaking into this field or selling photography online?
So I’m 17 and I am really interested in photography. To see some of my photographs go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/janemaxi/
Anyway, I’m also really interested in horses, and i’ve been working on my editing skills and horse photography and i was thinking it would be really awesome to do something with photography and horse shows…sort of like a part time job type of thing. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to get involved in something like this.
Also, I was wondering if anyone knew of any sites that were free where you can create a web page to sell your photography online. I was also thinking about setting up a site like that to see if anyone would want some of my photography, or if i did get into the horse show pictures, if anyone would want to buy those after their classes or whatever.
Does anyone have any tips or suggestions?
The best way to get your photographs noticed is that when you’re new (or even if you have a lot of experience) is start up a blog just for your photography.
Also, get a camera with manual controls, control is the key to great images. Without control you won’t be able to get the same quality of pics. With control you can do things like motion blur, night shots, determine depth and focus etc.
A few more hints on camera shopping: metal frames are much better than plastic–they’re much more durable. Plus, you’ll want a camera with interchangeable lenses.
Even if you have only the one lens now, as you become more serious, you’ll want to buy more. Most plastic-framed cameras do not support interchangeable lenses.
Also, what you could do is read the most you can about it, books, websites, blogs… There’s plenty of good information out there.

What are some different ways to copy right a photo?

Copyright exists from the moment you create your work and fix it in tangible form. However, even though it is not required, registering your photo with the US Copyright Office gives you the full protection of the law.
If you register BEFORE your copyright is infringed upon, (or within 90 days of publication), you can sue for statutory damages ($750 to $150,000) and legal fees. If you don’t register, you can only claim what your work MIGHT have sold for, which is hard to prove.
To register, go to the website:
http://www.copyright.gov
where you can register online or download an application, and submit your work. It costs $35 online, or $50 to $65 through the mail. On a single application, you can register unpublished work as a collection, as long as it is in the same year as the application. So, you only have to pay the fee once for a big batch of photos.
It takes from two to six months, (we are dealing with the government here), to get your certificate of registration, – unless you choose to expedite it, …. which costs an additional $760…. (see what I mean about dealing with the government).
There is also a Creative Commons license (CC) which lets you share photos without losing copyright while you specify clearly how they are to be used and that you are always credited. A CC license does not give you the same protection as a registered copyright, so only apply for a CC after you have registered. Here is more info on CC:
http://creativecommons.org
Be aware, there are lots of uses that don’t necessarily violate copyright. For instance, copyrighted photos can be used without permission or payment “for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research”. Many photo contests have rules allowing the sponsor to use entries for promotional and other purposes. You retain copyright, but you might not get paid.
Here is another not always widely known fact: If you shoot a photo for your employer, or under a work for hire contract, your EMPLOYER owns the copyright!
This information is taken from the book “The Law (In Plain English) for Photographers” by attorney Leonard D. Duboff.
Copyright is a LEGAL issue, and thus is open to many and varied interpretations and laws, …. that is why there is such a thing as copyright lawyers. When in doubt about something concerning your copyright, you have to seek expert legal advice.

Digital Photography Tips
When you are first getting into digital photography, make sure you have a general idea of what it is you will be dong with your camera. There are many things that can be done when one is starting to do digital photography, however if you do not know what you are doing or have never used a camera before you may want to educate yourself a little before jumping in.
Take A Class
There are many places where you can take a class on photography where they will not only teach you how to use a camera, but what type of camera to use as well. They will teach you where to take a picture and what types of mediums to use to get the effect you want in your picture. These classes are offered in many different places. Some are available at a community college, local camera shop or even by a local photo club.
Read A Book
There are many books that will teach you how to not only use a camera, but what different ones can do as well as what types of pictures each camera is good for. Try to find one that is easy reading for you and has good information. If it is a book made by a camera manufacturer, it is likely not a good source as it will only promote their products and not give a truly broad picture of digital photography.
Look Online
The web is a wonderful resource when it comes to research and self education. Many of the items that you want to know about in regards to digital photography are tight online and available for your perusal. Here you will be able to find out about all different things in relation to photography without needing to leave your home. In most cases, the information that you will find and need is available for free if you look in the right places.
So, make sure that before you go and buy a camera and just point and shoot, learn a little about it first. Consider all of the things that maybe you should know before you embark on your photography endeavor unarmed and unknowing. Learn a little so you will be able to better enjoy what you are doing and not become frustrated with a lack of understanding of the camera and all that it can do.
