Can I still refer to myself as a professional photographer?

I was a military photographer in the Army for 2 years, however due to an injury, was recently medically discharged. I plan to continue pursuing photography as a career now that I am back home and wanted to get your guys opinion on whether or not I can refer to myself as a professional photgrapher as it was my job (and I received a salary)? Thanks!

Of course. You have the skills. That is what really is the difference between a pro and an amateur. Yes, there are some advanced amateurs out there, but usually they haven’t had the professional experience of shooting on assignment.

Until you get back to shooting, consider yourself a temporarily, non-working pro.

Photojournalism project need Help please!?

Im doing a project on photojournalism……please help me with these questions thanx

~What is the nature of this field? indoor studio? Outside? Travel? Day? Night? Hired by assignment? work habits? daily, weekly, monthly?
Freelance? corporate? salary?

~What distinguishes this career from any other photography career? Work habits? Equipment? Special training or education?

I’m not going to answer your exact question, but I do have an idea.

First, photojournalism is -instead of having indoor studio- pretty much always outside. The big difference is that it’s not artistic or a composition you can spend ages thinking about, it’s click whenever you see something. You have to recognise a situation as photo-worthy, and click.

So your first question: It’s mostly outdoors, requiring a lot of travel both at day and at night, depending on the situation. Highly unpredictable, and there’s no real knowing of how much work you have this month. Some photographers are hired for newspapers, but most are working freelance and are hired on assignment.

And your second question: Again, it’s highly unpreditactable. The biggest difference is recognising a situation rather than composing a composition. The equipment you have should be good, but not too heavy to carry around with you. No huge flashlights, three million dollar cameras, etc. You have to realise your camera might not always survive the day. It requires special training, yes, because it requires a completely different attitude towards photography. There’s a difference between artistic and a good shot. A photojournalistic good shot is something that captures the moment, the atmosphere, while an artistic shot can be of a lot of things (landscapes, etc.) and not having any specific subject in the picture. Also, you will mostly photograph people and buildings, rather than waves and trees and landscapes.

Is pursuing a career in Photography worth it?

I’m really getting into photography because I love taking photos. But will it be worth it because I hear alot of people say photographers do not get paid very well. Even though if I don’t decide to become a professional photographer, I won’t stop taking photos.

How is the salary?

The salary depends on where you are located. If you’re located in a very rural area then the pay will be lousy. If you’re located in highly populated areas or reasonably large cities then the money is reasonably good. The money depends on the quality of your work, how well people like it, and how good you are at marketing. People always do well in doing something that they enjoy doing, period. Is it worth it — to me it is but that may vary according to each individual. I am sure that most successful photographers would agree with me. Everytime I work I make a minimum of $125 per hour.
