What are some good ways to get people to know my photography business and get clients?

I recently started a business shooting in my hometown and I wonder how I can get my name out there and win some potential customers. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Han promotions! Start with flyers to get a free 11×13, I say great because it will be harder to play a larger image. That will people in the door and it is difficult to choose when you see so many cute photos. The hospital also hand your coupons to new mothers in the welcome pack. you can see it requested marriage licenses and send information about your services. Another thing you can do is donate some of their services. People see something doing good and will associate your name with humanity good. Contact your local school and tell them you want to help them raise money, have the students hand in special coupons and will give the back school $ 5 for each packet sold or whatever. Hey congrats to start a new business in this economy. Good luck I wish the best. My boss started photography only as a hobby, now owns H & R image and not the images of the school of tons of schools. So start small and aim high !!!!!!!

Photography Business : Starting Your Own Home Photography Business

photography business
Do you have to make Register a home base photography business?

Hi I’m planning on doing a home based photography studio. My price aren’t going to be that high, do I still need to register the business?

where are you from? Canada, US, UK, Australia … laws change based on country, state, province, principality, kingdom, emirate …

Here in Canada, you have to declare ALL income but if you are going to be making less than 30K then you don’t have to get a business number and collect and remit sales taxes.

Also, you mention that your prices aren;t going to be that high … please don;t undervalue your services you a- are helping kill off the market and b- will be working yourself into bankruptcy.

You are now running a business … you are now a professional photographer (as in you have made a profession out of it) so it’s time to start thinking like a business professional. Think taxes, a growth fund, shooting costs, production costs, business costs (like business cards, flyers …) … all these things factor into how much you charge for your services.

Remember that you’ll have to PAY INCOME TAX on the income, not the profit you’ll be making. Remember that you’ll need money to help your buisiness grow and that you’ll need money so that you don’t starve to death.

Let’s say you did a 8 hour wedding (I use weddings cause that’s what I do) for 900$ + another 400$ for an album so 1300$

1- Take out income tax
I put aside 50% of my income from these contract to pay for income tax … we’re taxed pretty hard here on Canada. So 1300 / 2 = 650$ into income tax and 650$ left over.

2- Material costs
So they took an album … how much did that COST YOU to produce? 90$
650 – 90 = 560$

3- What about other direct businness costs like parking, gas, printing of contracts …
I set aside .33$ / KM of travel to meet with clients, and for traveling to the shoot and back becuase that’s a cost in wear and tear for my car and for gas. Then did you have to pay for parking? Did you have to pay for admitance anywhere?

So we’ll say 25Km round trip 3 times. Once to meet the client, once to sign the contract and once to deliver the end product. so about 25$ (24.75$)
560$ – 25$ = 535$

4- Ongoing business costs and growth.
So you need to put aside money for things like more gear, replacement gear, web hosting, printing of portfolios, paying an accountant, attending wedding shows, printing business cards, flyers …

I put 50% of what’s left into a growth fund … after all that Canon 5D Mk II isn;t going to buy itself now is it?

535$ / 2 = 267.50$ So 267.50 goes back into the business and the remaining 267.50 goes back into my pocket.

268$ … that sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Actually it’s not. So you spent 8 hours shooting + 2.5 hours meeting with the clients + another 4 hours doing post production on the images. So that’s 14.5 hours worth of work so you take home about 18.50$/hour for irregular work … that’s not really sustainable. It’s not like a guy who goes into the office every day, you can go for a week or so before you get another contract and in the meantime you need to be working on GETTING more contracts so that 18.50$ an hour drops to nothing.

Now just imagine if you had a brick and mortar studio to pay for and maintain? Or if you had employees?

Just don’t undervalue your services or you’ll be working at a LOSS.
