The Pros and Cons of Making Money With Online Blogs

There are a million and one ways to make money part time. And in this economy who doesn’t need a little extra (or a lot of extra) cash in their pocket! That’s why I’ve decided to start a series of articles where I lay out the pro’s and con’s of different kinds of part time businesses that you can do with a limited up front investment and in your spare time.

Blogging can be a great way to make money online talking about things that you’re already interested in or you already know a lot about.

You can literally blog about anything and everything you can imagine. Cooking, weight loss, being a stay at home mom, marketing, celebrity gossip, photography, and business are just a few examples but the possibilities are truly endless.

The main way that you’ll make money with blogging is by putting ads on your blog. You can do this through Google so that every time someone clicks on an ad from your blog you get paid. You can also do this with outside companies who specialize in blog ads or do it yourself by charging people on your own and then adding the ads yourself.

Sound easy? For the most part it is. The key though is to have enough daily, weekly and monthly viewers to make it worth your advertisers money. Nobody is going to spend money advertising on a blog that doesn’t get a lot of traffic. So driving traffic to your blog is the most important thing.

Now that you know the basics here are the pro’s and con’s of making money with an online blog.

Pro’s

- Get paid to talk about something you already love! The best blogs are the ones where the blogger has a true passion for whatever their blogging about. So if you love cooking you can get paid to talk about it… what’s better than that.

- Very part time work. You don’t have to invest a ton of time into a blog. Yes, you have to update it regularly and yes you have to spend time making sure you have enough traffic but it’s not like it’s a full time job.

- Cheap upfront investment. All you really need is a great domain name and some hosting to start out. You can also spend money on a blog designer to give you a great looking site but you can always do that later or maybe even do it yourself if you have the skills.

- It’s fun! This is one of the most fun ways of making money online that there is. If you really pick something that you’re passionate about it won’t feel like work at all!

Con’s

- No traffic = no money. If you can’t find a way to get a lot of traffic to your website you’re not going to be making any good money. The number one thing people have trouble with when it comes to blogs is figuring out how to get enough people to visit it in order for it to be truly worth it.

- It can take time to build up. If you think you’re just going to be able to throw up a blog and in a week be making money you’re wrong. Blogs are something that require more work up front and will pay off but not in the first few months (usually). So if you need income RIGHT NOW blogging might not be best for you.

- A lot of competition. Depending on the topic you choose there is a ton of competition out there. Blogs are all over the internet and sometimes it can be hard to make yours stand out. However, if you pick a good topic and you know how to market you can get past this.

- You must be consistent! A blog that makes money isn’t something that you can just throw up and then ignore for a week or a month. You must be consistent and update a lot so that people keep coming back and your traffic stays where it needs to be.

What would be a good name for a blog for me?

I would like to start an online blog on blogger.com. It would be a place for me to share everything about my day to day life on there. Mommy stuff, my graphic design stuff, my crafts, my everyday happenings, my writing, and whatever else I can think of. There are so many blogs out there with some pretty unique and witty names.
