What are the basic starters for starting an in home photography studio after the camera?

I am using an empty bedroom to begin as my studio and want to know what I NEED to have in the beginning. I will work my way up to having better equipment in the future. But for now, I just need the stuff any photographer would need for selling passable portraits and family photos. As far as lighting, that is what I need most help on. As far as props and backdrops, I got all that taken care of. Thanks!

A good telephoto lens 70mm-130mm is standard for portraits. But lighting is key. You’re going to need at least 1 strobe with an umbrella. A softbox is also a handy accessory. But I suggest studying studio lighting. There are key lights, fill lights, hair lights, catch lights, reflectors, and any number of accessories to alter the quality and color of the light coming from each. Knowledge of how these lights work together to do specific things is very important. Does your subject have a big witch nose? Zits? A B52s beehive? Square face, octagon, wrinkles? Do you want to show these things or hide them.

But you can get away with one strobe and umbrella.

Photography backdrop ideas?

Hi,

I’m trying to think up some creative low-cost alternatives to (or props to supplement) backdrops for portrait photography that I could use in a small space indoors.

Unless I’m not looking in the right place, backdrops made for purpose tend to be boring and/or tacky, and usually expensive?

Just looking for some ideas, wild and wacky is welcome!
I LOVE the digital backdrop idea. Actually it really does sound kind of obvious now that I think about it but I didn’t so thanks!!

If you’re digital, then maybe use a flat colour background and then put your choice of scene in digitally.
