Photography As A Career Option
Is my photography good enough to sell?

I have been doing photography for a very short time now as a career option, and I have a website set up to display. Do you think that my work is good enough to sell yet, or for me to offer professional portrait services, or do I need some more instruction before I take that step? I think you have talent and I think you have a good eye. I love the Beauty of Two and the subtle pagany nature of your nature photos. Cute kids too

You may want to try to get more of a portfolio together though – and get people that you know to let you do photos for them. I certainly think once you do this you have a good chance.

Photography As A Career Option

How do I embark on a photography career?

I was wondering if anybody could help me or offer me some advice please?
I’m 17 and am in the 6th form at school and so career options are very much being discussed at the moment. Personally I have a passion for photography and i’d love to work either as a professional wildlife photographer or even set up my own photography business. However some people have told me it may not be sensible to pursue this dream of owning my business in the current financial climate.
I was wondering what your views are on this point and if anybody has any tips on setting up my own business or generally getting into a photography career? Thanks for your time!

Owning your own business takes investment financially (to start) and time. I would recommend going to school for photography, and if you have room and time in your schedule, minor in business (or vise versa, whichever suits your interests). I have a friend who works occasionally as a photog for national geographic – he does independent work and gets jobs through contacts. He travels a lot and his schedule is very sporadic. He just went back to school because the life was hectic. I also personally know some photographers who own their own portrait business. They get most of their business through people looking at their (well designed) websites and personal contacts. A lot of photographers start off doing senior photos and families. I also know a photographer who has a studio and does commercial photography for the city’s weekender (magazine promoting events, concerts, local art, etc.). I also DATED (geez, I know, right) a photographer and he worked for an office furniture company where all he did was photograph furniture … and was extremely bored but gave him professional experience.

There is a lot of versatility with photography but you need to stay active and be your own agent and find your own work.
