My first studio portrait shoot?
I’m gonna be doing my first photo shoot soon. Have got all my lighting and backdrops etcetc so now need to practise and build up a portfolio. I’ve messed around and experimented with lighting and various settings with friends but I need to do a proper shoot with people I don’t know to really get the feel for it. I’m going to be doing it free and giving them all the images at the end.
Obviously because there is no money involved there isn’t much pressure and I can feel free to experiment and try things out more than I could if they were paying, but I still want to seem professional so am just looking for tips really.
What settings tend to produce what results?
(I have two 300W heads, two softboxes, a white umbrella, gold/silver reflector and various other accessories)
How would you utilise the softboxes and umbrella for this type of photography?
Do you have any other tips or advice?

You are certainly doing this the way you should. Learn to do the job correctly before expecting anyone to pay you. My wife served as my Guinea pig when I first set up a studio. I also PAID a couple of models to help me out in the beginning. There have been what must be hundreds of books and articles written on studio lighting. Trying to condense it all here would be a disservice to you.
You do not say if your 300W heads are strobes or continuous, and that will make a difference in how you use them.
In the most general terms, your umbrellas will give a very broad, soft light source with little control to direction or exact placement. Items such as snoots, barn doors, and grids are for more precise placement of light such as a hair light, background light, or to define certain parts of the face / body.
The softboxes also give soft, broad light, but with some more direction control than the umbrellas. I don’t always like the square catchlights that square softboxes can put in people’s eyes though.
You need to learn about light placement and how it should best be utilized for particular types of people. You can help a heavy person look thinner with light placement. You need to know about broad, narrow, rembrandt, butterfly light patterns and light ratios.
It really is not rocket science, but does take some study and experimentation. Just look online or at a bookstore for some books / info on studio lighting.

I need something simple that I can find on my own: -1 circle reflector -filters/lens light mini-bells off camera shutters tools, lighting, camera flash cleaning of the bag, my budget is $ 1000, I Canon Rebel XSi the sites are walmart.com target.com amazon.com use I can find, but I'm hesitant to choose the right one for me. I live in California.
