New To Photography, And Need Some Help!?

I just recently applied for a photography course at my high school, and I am really looking forward to learning all about the mysterious world of photography. I have had many good pictures taken with my Olympus camera (cant remember the brand..will post when find out) but my photography recommends a camera with Digital SLR or Point to Snap. I was thinking about getting an even better camera anyways, since mine is pretty old, and so I was just looking for opinions on good cameras ranging from $100-500. My teacher also recommends the Nikon or Canon brand, so I would typically hope for cameras with that brand.

Also, If you have any photo manipulation software’s that you recommend for me to use as well, that would be great. I know for a fact that we will be using the Light room, but I have experience with Photoshop..

Thanks!

Sony A200 with 18-70mm lens. MUCH better than the D40.

it’s gotten ‘better’ in the sense that it is easier and more affordable. As far as quality of pictures – in some cases it’s better, in other cases it’s worse.

Being a freelancer photographer, how much should I charge a family member to do a wedding?

My cousin Vince is asking me to take pictures for his wedding. I would only be putting the pictures onto a CD after the fact, not printing any pictures or anything. Doing everything with digital photography. I’d be taking pictures before and during the wedding. Also at the reception, for probably about 5 hours or so of constant photo taking. How much would be a reasonable cost to charge them? I’ve taken pictures for individuals but never on this big of a scale.

I am a photographer as well, the difference is that I’ve been shooting weddings for 8+ years. BUT at the beginning, when I was just beginning and was asked by friends and family to shoot weddings I would do it for FREE. My gift to the couple, and to myself, the experience is priceless.

Weddings are a HUGE event, lots of irreplaceable memories. Thankfully going digital has made it a TON easier for the amateur photographer to get involved and not screw things up too badly (good and bad… don’t let me get started on that..)

If you are dead set on earning some money for the gig then I wouldn’t top $300, if you aren’t doing prints or a lot of post processing I think that this is a fair rate. In all honesty I would offer it to them as a gift and let them know that any gratuity would be appreciated, but that they are welcome to send after they receive the photos. I did this once and my “tip” totaled $900, they loved the shots and I did the event for free, expecting nothing but experience and a satisfied couple.

One more thing – if you are not 110% sure that you can handle the even, since it is larger than you are used to you may want to decline, or try to shadow a couple of weddings under the wing of a pro to get your footing first. My first wedding was a mess – granted I salvaged it, but it really could have been a disaster. Consider equipment failure, bad weather, too many people trying to shoot over you – this is still my biggest pet-peeve! Make sure you have a contract – even if you shoot for free – stating that you can use the photos as you need for advertising/marketing, and make sure that you cover your butt should the terrible happen and the photos don’t turn out. People have been sued over the photos not turning out. Or being what the photographer promised.

Overall its a great experience, and if you can handle the heat then it will be a blast!

I wish you luck!
